What to check before you hire
In Wisconsin, a contractor pulling a permit on your home needs a DSPS Dwelling Contractor credential for the company and a Dwelling Contractor Qualifier credential for a person in the company. Ask for both numbers and look them up on the DSPS credential search. Confirm who applies for each permit (building, electrical, plumbing, HVAC), get a written scope and price, and ask what's warrantied. Before the final payment, make sure the final inspection has passed.
